Fern Offering Vessel
Ferns are some of the most ancient plants on the earth, existing in fossil records millions of years before the dinosaurs. It’s little wonder that they have a place in the mythology and folklore of many cultures.
In Celtic mythology the fern has been known as the ‘death flower’ and ‘treasure fist’ because they were seen to grow on ancient burial mounds and there were guarded by trolls within who kept the treasure safe. The fern was said to signify the presence of such buried treasure.
To the Maori of New Zealand, the fern represents new life and new beginnings. To the Japanese, the fern symbolizes family and the hope for future generations. According to the Victorians, the fern symbolized humility and sincerity.
The seed of the fern was once supposed to be invisible and capable of communicating it’s invisibility to anyone who possessed it. And so even Shakespeare, in the play: King Henry IV wrote the line “We have receipt of the fern seed: we walk invisible.”
